History

Withers Farm sits within the historic landscape of the New Forest, an area with a history stretching back centuries. The New Forest was established as a royal forest by William the Conqueror in the late 11th century, shortly before the compilation of the Domesday Book in 1086.

The Forest was not simply woodland, but a working landscape of woodland, heath, pasture and farmland, shaped over generations by farming, forestry and the traditional rights of commoners. Withers Farm forms part of this enduring rural landscape, where agriculture and the traditions of the New Forest continue to coexist with its rich archaeological and cultural heritage.

The stone provides a modern link to that history, bringing the contemporary practice of English stonelifting into a landscape shaped by generations of rural life.
