The replacement stone was sited by @roger.davis333. The tenant farmer is happy for lifts to be had, but has asked to be informed before any visits. Ensure the gate is left closed after visiting. Please contact @sherlock_stones to request permission to lift.

History

First written about in 1847 in the book "Minstrelry of the English Boarders" by Fredrick Sheldone. It is a fragment of a ballad relayed to him at the time by cattle drovers of Morpeth. The balled talks of a Nelly of Elsden offering to marry the man could lift the Blue Stone, several men tried, but only Diccon of Bewick was able to lift it. He then shouldered and threw the stone across the meadow.
