Articles submitted support the history of Stone lifting in England.
Stone lifting is a traditional test of strength with documented examples across Britain and wider Europe. Although the surviving evidence for England varies between regions, historical records, folklore, oral traditions and academic research provide a basis for investigating stone lifting as part of England’s cultural and physical heritage. Academic research has demonstrated that lifting stones can be studied through social history, folklore, community traditions and living heritage, while England’s own surviving lifting stones provide an opportunity to document and preserve this often-overlooked tradition. English Stonelifting aims to contribute to this record by documenting stones, their histories, associated traditions and the people connected with them, while distinguishing documented history from modern revival.
