History
Yorkshire, especially the Dales, holds many place names of Norse origin — linking the landscape to mythic traditions.
In Norse belief, giants — the Jötnar — were said to dwell in mountains and caves, places that marked the edge of the known world. Very much like the Norse land of the giants - Jotunheim, one of the Nine Worlds in Norse cosmology, described as cold, mountainous and heavily forested.
Caves were thought of as thresholds to older, wilder realms, and the limestone scars and towering cliffs could be imagined as petrified beings, frozen in stone and time.
