History

The spruce trees on Longridge Fell are non-native, primarily Norway spruce (Picea abies) introduced from Northern Europe. Planted during the mid-19th to early 20th centuries, these trees were used for timber production, soil stabilisation, and to reclaim areas affected by quarrying and grazing.

While not part of the original Lancashire woodland, the spruce now forms a dense, evergreen backdrop, reflecting both historical forestry practices and the ecological changes on the fell over the past 150–170 years.
