History

Mayburgh Henge dates to around 2500 BCE, during the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age.

It is a vast circular enclosure built from thousands of water-worn cobblestones gathered from nearby rivers.

At its centre stands the last surviving stone of what was once a group of eight large standing stones.

These stones originally formed a square, with two also marking the entrance to the monument.

Although the henge’s exact purpose remains unknown, it is widely believed to have been used for ritual and ceremonial activities between c. 2500–2000 BCE.

It may also have served as a gathering place for social events or as a site connected to astronomical observation, with the central stone forming the focal point of the monument.

The central stone still stands, rising above the henge as the last remining guardian of an older and more ancient time.
