History

The two stones have been placed at the site of Jane Pit, in Workington. They stand as a tribute to the 100 miners who lost their lives in the inundation of 25 July 1875, when the Irish Sea broke into the workings, flooding the mine and forcing its permanent closure.

Opened in 1843 during the rapid expansion of coal mining in West Cumbria, Jane Pit formed part of Workington’s industrial growth, supplying coal to local industry and coastal trade.

Today, it is preserved as a scheduled monument, notable for its distinctive castellated engine house and its rare combination of an early pony gin system and a later 19th-century steam-powered winding engine, reflecting the transition in mining technology over time.
