History
Tucked away within the wooded valley of Longtimber Woods in Ivybridge lies the quiet remains of a forgotten swimming pool, originally constructed in the 19th century as a reservoir supplying water to the growing town.
Following the development of a larger water source in the early 1900s, the old reservoir was repurposed around the time of the World War I into a simple open-air bathing pool for local residents. Basic in its design, it featured little more than changing huts and a springboard, yet became a cherished spot for recreation and swimming lessons through the interwar years.
During World War II, the pool took on a more practical role, being used by American troops for training exercises. By the mid-20th century, however, it fell into decline as modern leisure facilities emerged, and today only subtle traces remain, reclaimed by the surrounding woodland—a quiet echo of community life and adaptation in the landscape.
