History
The original stones were included on the Ordnance Survey maps as far back as 1867 and the site was documented during a field survey in 2003. It is believed the original stones were either built into a retaining wall when the reservoir level was raised or buried when a forest road was constructed in the 1950s.
Known locally as the "Lady's Stone" the "Man's Stone" and the "Strong Man's Stone" they sit on the North banks of Ennerdale Water on the track to Gillerthwaite Farm and a medieval iron smelting site.
Three modern stoned have been placed at the site where the historic stones were thought to once stand. Whilst permission has not been attained from the landowner, they sit beside a popular and well used Public Footpath, so access to the stones is permitted.
