History
In 1648 an army of 8,000 men marched over the bridge led by Oliver Cromwell to the battle of Preston, which became a decisive victory during the English Civil Wars. The victory helped secure the Parliamentarian cause, the King's execution and establishing the Commonwealth of England. Some speculate the bridge inspired J.R.R Tolkien's depiction of the Brandywine Bridge in the Lord of the Rings.
