History

Brownslow Brook runs through quiet woodland on the slopes of Longridge Fell, an area shaped by rural industry and farming from at least the 17th century. By the 1700s, the brook would have supported small-scale agriculture, providing water for livestock and field systems, and may have fed simple water-powered processes such as grinding or washing.

During the late 18th and 19th centuries (c. 1750–1900), the wider Longridge Fell area became closely tied to sandstone quarrying, supplying building stone for local towns and cities including Preston. Tracks and routes across the fell—some following natural lines like the brook—were used to move quarried stone. The brook also acted as a natural boundary marker between enclosures created during the period of agricultural improvement and land division.
